ALAMOSA, CO – The Cougars baseball team continued their exciting weekend with a heart attack inducing Saturday sweep.
The Colorado Christian baseball team came away with a pair of one-run victories, despite late inning drama, to run their winning streak to four games.
GAME ONE – Colorado Christian 4, Adams State 3
What started as a good old fashion pitchers dual turned into something completely different in the last two innings.
Both Kylar Riordan and Adams State starting pitcher Jamison Fuentes worked zeros on the scoreboard through five innings. Each pitcher gave up just two hits each during the first five frames as Riordan face two batters over the minimum while Fuentes struck out nine.
In the sixth frame, the Cougars scored four unearned with four extra base hits. Blake Mattey started the merry-go-round with an RBI double. The string continued as Caden Walton and Tommy Orr each hit a run scoring two baggers. Sam Gallegos completed the scoring with an RBI triple.
The four-run lead was threatened as Adams State hit a pair of solo homeruns to cut the lead in half in the final inning. A two-out bases loaded walk made the score 4-3 before JC Watne completed his relief appearance with a ground out.
Luke Thompson and Gallegos each had a pair of base knocks to lead the offense. Riordan fell one out short of his second career complete game but did get his first win of the season while Watne earned his third save.
GAME TWO – Colorado Christian 10, Adams State 9
The second game continued as the first one ended. With lots of scoring.
Gallegos doubled to open the scoring in the first inning before Wyatt Crenshaw hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 2-0 edge as Adams State came to the plate for the first time. The home team proceeded to grab a 6-2 lead as they put a six-spot on the scoreboard with six hits in their first inning. Adams State upped their lead to 7-2 with another run in the second stanza.
Colorado Christian evened up the contest with a five-run fourth inning. Orr, Eli Ludwig and Gallegos each had run scoring base knocks while Luke Thompson drew a base loaded walk. Crenshaw gave the Cougars the lead in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI double to left centerfield.
The lead didn't last long as Mike Bathauer hit a two-run, one-out homerun to left field to give the home team a 9-8 lead heading into the final inning. Luke Thompson tied the game with a one-out single to centerfield then Drew Lloyd gave the Cougars a 10-9 lead with a two-out single, scoring Manny Thompson.
Adams State put runners on second and third with one out, but the home team lined into a double play to end the contest as Watne picked up his second save of the day.
