First NCAA Postseason Competition But Not A Postseason First

While this is the first NCAA postseason trip for the Colorado Christian baseball program, it is not their first berth into a postseason event. When the Cougars competed for National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), the program appeared in six separate postseason events for the NCCAA.

The Offensive Leaders

Jordan Medina has been the driving force of the Cougars offense since the season started. Earlier this season he had a team best 11-game hitting streak. In addition to the categories below, he also leads the team in multi-hit games (14) and multi-RBI games (9).

Category Team Rank
Batting Average - .352 1st
Hits - 51 1st
Runs Scored - 30 1st
RBI - 31 1st
Slugging Percentage - .614 1st
Home Runs - 9 1st
On Base Percentage - .406 1st

Blake Mattey is the squad's second biggest offensive threat. He is second on the team with a .318 batting average as well as on base percentage (.377) while playing in 31 of the team's 39 games. Wyatt Crenshaw is second on the team in home runs (5), RBI (20) and slugging percentage (.435) and over the last 10 games has recorded a .375 batting average.

As a team the Cougars have posted a .253 batting average.

On the Mound

Kyler Riordan has started all nine games he has appeared with a team high 38 strikeouts. In his final collegiate season the righthander has thrown a team 50.2 innings. He is the only Cougar pitcher to throw over 40 innings this season. In his last start against CSU Pueblo he threw a team season high 7.2 innings to earn the win. Along with Riordan, Justin Kiedinger has started nine game as the super senior has struck out 20 in his starts.

A handful of hurlers have seen time out of the bullpen and in starting roles. Devin Sutorius and Tyler Henning has split time between the two roles. Sutorius has 12 apperances with six starts whee he has struck out 30 in 38.0 innings of work. His lefty teammate has six starts during his 11 appearances with 24 strikeouts in 39.1 innings.

Out of the bullpen JC Watne has been a force. He is 4-0 with five saves while recording a 1.77 ERA. During his 20.1 innings on the mound he has 18 strikeouts.

... And in the Field

The Cougars defense has been as good as it ever has been. They have a .967 field percentage which is tied for third in the RMAC. There 44 errors are the fourth fewest in the league.

RMAC Coaches Poll

The preseason RMAC coaches poll picked the Cougars to finish seventh in the nine-team conference. Colorado Mesa was picked to win the league as they received eight of the possible nine first-place votes. Colorado School of Mines was selected second, garnering the other first-place vote.

Head Coach - Paul Koss

The 2020-21 season will be the first full season as head coach for Koss.

Paul Koss was named the school's full-time baseball coach on March 19, 2020. He was serving as the interim head coach for just over four months prior. He has been with the program since the 2017 season, serving as the squad's pitching coach before being elevated to the program's leader.

Originally from California, Koss played baseball at Orange Lutheran High School, where he then went on to play at the University of Southern California.

After four years of playing at USC he was selected in the 11th round of the 2007 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played for the organization for four seasons, reaching the AA level. Koss recorded 20 saves and 140 strikeouts as a reliever in his four Minor League Baseball seasons. He was a single-A All-Star while playing in the California League in 2008.

In his playing career at USC he was the closer for three years ending his career second all-time in career saves, single season saves and appearances for the Trojans. This lead to playing for the Chatham A's in the Cape Cod league and earning a spot on the All-Star team in 2006 and received pitcher of the year honors.

Suplizio Field

It is named after former Denver Bears right fielder, New York Yankees prospect and MLB Coach Sam Suplizio. Suplizio Field is the home of the Grand Junction Rockies of the independent Pioneer League. In June 2011, both Suplizio Field and Ralph Stocker Stadium underwent an $8.3 million renovation project[permanent dead link] to replace the aging original concrete bleacher section along the first base line at Suplizio, along with the original bleacher section and press box on the west side of adjoining Ralph Stocker Stadium, with a new section that includes new seating for both venues as well as a new two story press box and handicapped accessible mezzanine level which was ready for use by May 2012.
