Cougars Come Up Short at Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, UT- The Colorado Christian men's basketball team headed to Salt Lake City to take on Westminster College on Friday. The game was tight throughout the first half, but the Griffins offense found another gear in the second frame to claim a 60-47 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED- The game started off with both defenses playing well, as the first basket came with over two minutes already played. The Cougars got on the board with a three-pointer from Andy Stafford and Isaiah Alonzo drilled another shot from deep to put his team ahead 6-5. Colorado Christian continued to make it rain from beyond the arc, with two more threes from Christian St. Germain and Stafford. Ross Williams and DJ McDonald continued the onslaught with threes of their own to push the lead to 18-11 with 9:10 left in the half.

The Griffins pushed back to tie the game, but Shaylen Woodberry nailed a three to put the Cougars back ahead. Alonzo and McDonald got a layup and jumper to go as the tightly contested half came to a close with the Griffins leading 29-27. 

Westminster came out firing to begin the second half, stretching the lead to nine before a McDonald three cut it back to six. Stafford converted a layup to draw the Cougars within four, but the lead stretched to eight at the halfway mark of the half. 

Ross Williams scored six straight points for the Cougars with several layups and a jumper, but the Griffins offense began to find its rhythm and stretch the lead further. Alonzo made a layup and Jaret Duft hit a late three, but Westminster claimed the 60-47 victory with a strong second half. 

COUGARS LEADERS:
Ross Williams and Isaiah Alonzo led the Cougars with nine points apiece while Shaylen Woodberry pulled down seven rebounds to lead the team. DJ McDonald dished out three assists to pace Colorado Christian. 

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Cougars poured in 15 bench points to the Griffins 14

  • Colorado Christian put up 18 points in the paint

  • The lead changed six times and the game was tied twice


UP NEXT- The Cougars will now head to Grand Junction to take on Colorado Mesa on January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
