Colorado Christian Topple Mountaineers for Second Straight Win

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed the home portion of their season with a matchup against Western Colorado Saturday evening. Led by an efficient attack and solid defense, CCU snagged the four-set win for their second consecutive victory with two games to play in the regular season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED- Colorado Christian started strong, taking an early 7-4 lead on several kills from Savannah Overson. Libby Goodman pushed the advantage to 12-8 with a kill, and the lead later grew to 18-12 on a slam from Anna Merrill. A late five-point run closed out the set 25-20 in favor of the Cougars. 

Set two remained much closer throughout, as the two teams fought to a 16-16 tie midway through. Renee Phillips made it 19-16 with a kill, but the Mountaineers refused to go down easily, rallying back for a 20-19 lead. With the score tied at 22, WCU scored three straight to claim the set 25-22.  

The Mountaineers jumped out to an 8-6 lead early, but the Cougars shook that off quickly. They tied things at 1 and later took a 13-10 lead on a WCU error. The mistakes began to pile up as the advantage grew to 18-13 after a slew of errors. Lilly Woods gave her team set point with a kill and proceeded to close it out 25-17 with another slam. 

Resolute on closing out the win in four sets, CCU began with five straight points capped by a Goodman kill. Izzy Jones picked up an ace to make it 12-5, and the lead stretched all the way to 19-12 on a Western Colorado error. Megan Piton served five straight points on her senior night, helped by three Phillips kills as match point arrived at 24-13. Goodman finished the match out with a kill as they claimed the set and the match 25-15. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Libby Goodman was on fire all night, slamming 19 kills on .567 hitting 
  • Izzy Jones tallied 39 assists on the night to facilitate the offense
  • Savannah Overson picked up 11 digs to lead her team 

UP NEXT- As the home portion of their season has come to a close, the Cougars now look ahead to a big matchup at CSU Pueblo on November 4 at 7 p.m. MST.
