Cougars Net Thrilling Victory Over Western

LAKEWOOD, CO - It was a blizzard outside of the CCU Event Center on Tuesday night as CCU faced off against Western Colorado University. Christian was able to keep the pressure on throughout the game as they were able to secure the victory by a final score of 76-67. 30 seconds into the game CCU took the lead with the opening basket of the game, and never gave it back as they led throughout the remainder of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED - Despite the frigid temperatures outside the Cougars started the game on fire as they jumped out to the early lead over Western Colorado University and held onto that lead for the remainder of the half to take a 41-33 lead heading into halftime. Stingy defense helped build that lead for Colorado Christian as they were able to force nine turnovers against Western in the half and turned that into nine points on the offensive end.

CCU was led in scoring in the first half by DJ McDonald and Jason Gallant who each scored nine points in the opening half. Andy Stafford was also a key contributor as he tallied eight points and Ross Williams scored seven. Isaiah Alonzo led the Cougars in rebounding with six rebounds and also added three points in the half.

CCU held onto the same game plan for the second half as they continued to play tight defense and run a controlled offense. The Cougars controlled the inside of the paint as they dominated with 28 points in the paint compared to just 16 from Western. The Cougars had four players finish the game in double figures as they were led in scoring by Andy Stafford who contributed 22 points. Ross Williams finished with 17 points including the final exclamation point in the victory as he threw down a monster jam with just 12 seconds remaining in the game. Guard DJ McDonald tallied 13 points and led the Cougars with six assists in the game. Jason Gallant rounds out the CCU players in double figures as he tallied 10 points. Shaylen Woodberry led the Cougars on the defensive side of the ball as he disrupted the WCU game plan by recording four steals on the night.

UP NEXT - The win improves the CCU record to 6-13 overall and 3-10 in conference play. CCU will be back in action at the CCU Event Center for their next game against Regis University. The game will be on Friday February 4th with tip scheduled for 7PM.
