LAKEWOOD, CO- It was a raucous environment at the CCU Event Center on Friday as the Cougars took on Regis University. Colorado Christian put on a show and gave the fans what they wanted, toppling the number two team in the RMAC by a final score of 86-81.
HOW IT HAPPENED- The Cougars got off to a strong start as Andy Stafford nailed a jumper under a minute into the game. Ross Williams continued the scoring with a basket and DJ McDonald made a jumper to put his team ahead early. The offense continued to click on all cylinders with a Williams three and another Stafford jumper. Midway through the half the score stood tied at 22.
McDonald continued an excellent half as he connected on a jumper and Jason Gallant joined in the scoring frenzy with a three. Stafford and Williams pushed the lead to eight, and the duo combined again later in the half with a three and jumper to push the Cougar lead to 13. Three free throws to close the half from Williams gave Colorado Christian a 51-38 lead heading to the break.
Regis came out strong to begin the half, but Gallant quieted the comeback with a big three-pointer. The two teams battled back and forth but the Rangers slowly drew closer to tie the game at 65 with 9:59 to play.
The fight continued down the stretch, and a huge three from Christian St. Germain put the Cougars on top 72-70. McDonald then converted a three-point play, and a Williams three put Colorado Christian up four. Williams continued to dominate in crunch time, pushing the lead to six with a little over two minutes to play. A late three from Regis brought some drama to the finish, but the Cougars hit their free throws to finish off an impressive 86-81 victory.
COUGARS LEADERS:
Ross Williams led Colorado Christian with 29 points, followed by DJ McDonald with 23. Isaiah Alonzo dominated on the boards, snagging 13 rebounds to lead his team. Jason Gallant dished out five assists on the night.
