BOULDER CITY, NV- Battling through windy conditions in Nevada, Colorado Christian turned in a performance to remember at the Las Vegas Desert Classic. Taking on five top 10 teams in the nation, the Cougars played incredible all three days to claim the title by an impressive four strokes in their first competition of the Spring.
DAY ONE
Xavier Bighaus led his team from start to finish, tallying four birdies on his way to an even par round on the first day. The conditions were extremely windy, ranging from 25-35 mph over the course of the day. CCU battled through, with Dylan Arthur coming in at a 74 with four birdies as well in the tough conditions. Peyton Jones followed with a 75, while Camron Reddell netted a 78. Adam Duncan closed out the windy day with an 82 as CCU sat in first heading into day two.
DAY TWO
Bighaus turned in the performance of a lifetime, shooting a 66 with seven birdies with the winds still blowing at 15 mph for a score of six under par on the day. Duncan turned it on for his team, netting four birdies on his way to a 69 for three under par. Reddell finished with a 72 for even par, while Jones and Arthur shot a 77 and 78 respectively. The Cougars still held the lead heading into the final day of competition.
DAY THREE
With the defending National Champions Lee University hot on their heels, the Cougars knew they needed a strong day to finish the job. Bighaus shot a 75 as he closed the tournament three under par and claimed fourth place overall. Jones had his best day when he needed to, shooting a 68 with five birdies and an eagle on the par 5 hole 13 to close four under par on the day and four over par to tie for 12th. Duncan tied Jones for 12th, shooting a 69 on five birdies to come in four over par and three under on the day. Reddell posted a 75 to close tied for 28th, and Arthur shot a 75 as well to come in a tie for 38th.
Bighaus was named to the All Tournament Team for his excellent play.
Overall, the Cougars shot an 870 over the three days, just six over par as they held off Lee by four strokes and claimed the biggest victory in program history. The number two, three, four, eight and 10 teams in the nation were all competing, but the Cougars did not let the high level of competition daunt them in a historic victory in Nevada.
Following the huge victory to start spring play, the Cougars will compete back in Colorado on March 20-21 at the Southern CO Masters at Pueblo Country Club.
