BOULDER CITY, NV- The Cougars took on #3 Florida Southern on Thursday in the match play quarterfinals of the DII NCAA National Championships. In a battle with the Mocs that came all the way down to the final hole, CCU came up heartbreakingly short in a down to the wire 3-2 loss.
Camron Reddell took on Tyler Mistretta of Florida Southern and battled hard but could not come up with a victory. Camron shot a solid 72, but his opponent carded a 68 for the win.
Next up came
Peyton Jones, and the senior played an incredible round as he did not bogey a single hole with 4 birdies on his way to a 68 for a two stroke victory over Donte Groppuso.
Lance Christensen Jr. faced off with All-American Max Barile, and the grad student did not disappoint after his second place finish in stroke play. In what was an absolute battle throughout, Lance netted three birdies on the front nine and eagled hole 13 to finish with a 67 and take down his opponent by two strokes.
Bradley Mulder faced off against a red hot Colton Swartz, and he could not keep pace as Swartz carded a stellar 66. A consistent 72 from Mulder was not enough as the match stood at 2-2 coming down to the final pairing.
Tyler Debruyckere and Anthony Monteleone faced off in a back and forth affair through 18 holes. Trailing by two on the front nine, Tyler flipped the script with an eagle and birdie to take a three stroke lead. An eagle from his opponent tied things after nine holes as the back nine would decide who would advance. A hole 10 birdie from Debruyckere put him up a stroke, and heading into hole 16 things stood tied. A wild sequence ensued as Tyler birdied 16 and his opponent did the same on 17 to tie the match. Unfortunately a bogey from Debruyckere on 18 and a par from his opponent won the match for Florida Southern.
It was a thrilling back and forth battle between the two teams as each player fought tooth and nail all the way to the end. In the end the Mocs just barely edged the Cougars 3-2 in an instant classic. The setback draws to a close a memorable first season under head coach Cameron Sandland as CCU beat the odds all year to advance to match play for the third straight season. The team has much to be proud of as they saw
Bradley Mulder win the individual RMAC title,
Peyton Jones claimed three individual victories throughout the season, the team took the Sam Proal Invite in Pueblo,
Lance Christensen Jr. took second at the national championships and the team made their third straight appearance at the NCAA DII National Championships as they once again proved that CCU Men's Golf is always a contender on the biggest stage.
