Offensive Explosion Powers Cougars to Dominant 7-1 Senior Day Victory Over Cowgirls

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars played their final home game of the season on Sunday at Trailblazer Stadium against New Mexico Highlands as they celebrated their two seniors Ava Dinverno and Justine Moreau. CCU sent their seniors out in style, led by Dinverno with a hat trick and Moreau with a goal and an assist in a convincing 7-1 victory.

Ava opened the scoring quickly, notching home her first of the day in the fifth minute to send her team ahead 1-0 on an assist from Sophia Tagge. Moreau then set up Breenalyn Shimabukuro in the 28th minute of play, as a ball played to the back post was finished for a 2-0 advantage. The Cowgirls brought a goal back in the 41st, but Moreau restored the two goal lead just before half with under 10 seconds remaining as she ripped a shot far post off a pass from Grace Sams to send CCU ahead 3-1 at the break.

The onslaught continued in the second half as Dinverno picked up her second goal of the game in the 55th minute off an assist from Sadie Roberston. It was Shimabukuro again in the 62nd as she took a cross off a pair of passes between Lexi Taitague and Olivia Maxfield and chipped it home as CCU comfortably went ahead 5-1. Ella Salsbery notched back-to-back assists in the final 10 minutes of play, the first going to Dinverno in the 80th as she netted the fifth hat trick in program history. The second came just over a minute later as Alexis Byrd scored the final goal of the game to make it 7-1 and seal a dominant victory in their final home contest of the year.

It was a dominant offensive effort as the Cougars had 18 total shots with 14 of them being on goal. The two seniors who were celebrated postgame had a storybook close to their career at home, with Dinverno netting three goals and Moreau tallying a goal and assist.

The win was an important one as CCU has now vaulted into the eighth spot in the RMAC standings, the final spot that would make the RMAC Tournament. The Cougars will close the regular season with a three game roadtrip, beginning with a tilt at Fort Lewis on October 31 at 7 p.m. MDT.
