Lakewood, CO – The Cougars saw yet another draw in their final non-conference matchup against UT-Tyler. After going up 2-0 in the first half, CCU was unable to stop the Patriots from finding 2 goals to equalize.
It was a strong start for the Cougars, only needing 11 minutes to find the back of the net. Starting the game off with a strong press,
Antonio Lugo won the ball in the final third, streaking down the left side of the pitch. A clever outside of the boot pass would find the left foot of Ben Brown, smashing the ball into the side net for the opening goal.
UP 1-0, CCU continued to press for more, needing only 10 more minutes to find the back of the net again. A
Kylar Carr cross saw Ben Brown head the ball strait into the post, dropping to the weak foot of
Tiago Gomes. A right foot half volley would fly past the keeper for Gomes first goal of the season, and the 2-0 lead.
UT Tyler, a fire lit under their feet, refused to go down without a fight. A late goal in the 38
th minute would cut the deficit in half, the whistle blowing with a CCU lead 2-1.
The second half saw several quality attempts on goal, both sides each with a handful of opportunities. CCU managed to find a 1v1 with the keeper, unable to convert and bury the game. The 84
th minute, UT Tyler would find the equalizer, Garcia Valle finding the top left corner, curling the ball just over an outstretched Wolfgram.
The game ending 2-2, the result marks the Cougars 4
th tie in a row, all coming from late opponent equalizers. Brown lead the Cougars with 4 shots and a goal, Gomes scoring his first goal of the season, and Lugo finding his first assist of his career.
Campbell Wolfgram saw 90 minutes between the posts, making 5 saves.
Now 1-1-4, the Cougars travel to nearby CSU Pueblo for their first in-conference opponent on September 17
th. Kickoff is set for 7pm MST at CSU Pueblo.
