Lakewood, CO – The Cougars delivered a statement win on Sunday morning, taking down Adams State 5-0 in an offensive flurry. A shutout in their first conference win, the Cougars had 5 different goal scorers on the day.
A fast start for both sides from the opening whistle, the Grizzlies nearly broke through in the fourth minute, smashing a shot off the post and onto the goal line. In a strong response,
Casey DeVito opened up the scoring in the 13
th minute off an assist from
Kylar Carr. Driving down the left sideline, Carr beat his defender, whipping a ball onto the six yard box for a calm and collected finish from DeVito, passing the ball between the keepers legs into the back of the net.
Just 10 minutes later,
Oscar Sreckov scored his first ever collegiate goal, drawing a penalty in the 24
th minute. After a penalty save from ASU's keeper, Sreckov headed the ball back into the net off the deflection to double the Cougars lead.
The Cougars would add another before half, Ben Brown scoring his third goal of the season his first touch of the game. A brilliant outside of the boot pass from
Jackson Schroeder led
Rayce Haldy down the line, beating his defender and cutting the ball back into the box. Subbing on less than a minute prior, Ben Brown would go vertical, smashing the ball in the air, flying past the Grizzly keeper into the side netting to make the game 3-0 at halftime.
The second half would be just as dominant for the Cougars, finding the back of the net again in the 60
th minute.
Rayce Haldy would find his first collegiate goal from
Kylar Carr, scoring just 20 seconds after being subbed in. Flicking the ball onto a sprinting Carr, Haldy would hightail it back into the box for the cutback, smashing the ball near post to lift the Cougars 4-0 on the day.
Antonio Lugo, a familiar goalscorer for the Cougs would find the back of the net yet again in the 80
th minute . Slipped in by
Jacob Hull, Lugo would calmly beat his defender, slipping the ball past the Grizzly goalkeeper for his 4
th goal of the season, sealing the game at 5-0.
The Cougars had a combined 22 shots, 15 on frame. Defensively, CCU only allowed 2 shots on goal, Wolfgram walking away with his second clean sheet of the season.
Now 2-4-4, the Cougars sit 7
th in the RMAC table with a 1-1 conference record. The Cougars will return to action on October 4, traveling to Golden to take on cross-town rivals Colorado School of Mines. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. MST.
