CCU Softball ranks #23 in Hero Sports National D2 Softball Rankings. After an impressive preseason performance, which included defeating #5 Humboldt State, the Cougars are 7-1 overall. Head Coach
Shanon Hays remarked "It's nice to be recognized for getting off to a good start. We had some good wins over some ranked teams early. But the RMAC is really good this year so we have a long way to go".
And Coach Hays is right. The RMAC features #8 NCAA ranked Colorado Mesa University who is currently 10-0. Despite the tough competition headed their way, the Cougars are focused on improving their game… oh and getting their games in. Weather has already cancelled/postponed five games this season, in which the Cougars hope to make up with five victories.
In only his second year as head coach,
Shanon Hays has brought in and built-up one of the most talented squads in program history. CCU's offense is led by returning All-American #88
Charlotte Romero (DP) who currently ranks 4
th in the RMAC in batting average .579%. CCU's defense is led by returning RMAC Pitcher of the Year and NFCA All-Region #8
Kenzie Mattey. Mattey is a perfect 5-0 this season with a 1.24 ERA (2
nd in the RMAC), pitching 28.1 innings with 23 strikeouts.
Adding to the already talented squad are:
- Junior #18 Shelby Fusich (C, 3B) who has three homeruns and 14 RBI (double that of anyone else on the team)
- #23 freshman shortstop Kacie Burger who is hitting .400% and starting all games
- and then transfer senior outfielder #2 Alyssa Hanks who boast three triples, a double, a homerun and seven RBI.
"If our pitching can stay healthy I think we can have some success. We have been a good base running ream and have played solid defense. We need to continue that throughout season"-Coach Hays
