Men's Soccer Partners with Team IMPACT

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – There was a lot of commotion inside the Anschutz Student Center on an otherwise benign Tuesday evening on the Colorado Christian campus.

What was taking place was a first of its kind event for the Cougar athletic department.

The Colorado Christian men's soccer team partnered with Team IMPACT to sign Joel Zamora to a contract for the 2018 season.

"Signing Joel to our program embodies what we are trying to instill in our players," assistant coach Graham Delano said. "We are trying to instill a sense of perseverance and strength into our team on the field. What Joel is battling through is an inspiration to us. We are thrilled to welcome him to the squad."

What makes this 10-year old young man a unique talent is last year he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that required the partial amputation of his left leg. The family connected with Team IMPACT, a national organization whose goal is to connect children with series and chronic illnesses with local collegiate athletic teams, who then put them in touch with the Colorado Christian men's soccer program.

"This is such an obvious connection," said head coach Gary Evans. "We have really enjoyed getting to know Joel and his family. Our team has already embraced this young man and I can't wait to see how we can help him battle this illness. Moreover, Joel's strength and determination is very inspiring. It is impossible not to be affected by his resolve."

During the season Joel will have a special seat on the sidelines during each home game and will participate in numerous team activities throughout the campaign.

On Sunday afternoon during the Cougars home RMAC conference opener, Joel will start the game with the first kick for the Noon game at Trailblazer Stadium.
