LAKEWOOD,CO- As the fall season has come to a close, the standings for the Learfield Division II Directors Cup have been released. After an autumn to remember, Colorado Christian comes in at 23rd with 152.5 points, the highest the school has ever been on the list.
The Learfield Directors Cup is a competition across all NCAA sports and divisions, and the final award will be given out at the conclusion of the spring 2023 season. The point system measures performance at NCAA championships and postseason play, giving out predetermined point totals for placement at the championships.
The point getters from the fall hailed from the men's and women's cross country teams. The men had an incredible performance at the National Championships, bringing home a third place finish to garner 85 points for CCU in the standings. Women's cross country took home 10th place to secure their best finish in program history and earn 67.5 points for their school.
Prior to this fall, the highest CCU has ever finished on the list is 70th, which came last year with the postseason performances of softball, men and women's golf, and men and women's cross country. With no standings in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 season due to covid shortened seasons, the Cougars had not finished within the top 100 in any other seasons prior to last year. With the winter season underway and the entire spring season to play, CCU already is just 30 points off of the entire total they placed 70th with last year.
In the last four seasons, the Cougars have gone from not even appearing on the list, to a top 25 spot in the initial fall standings. The momentum athletics is building is palpable, and seeing CCU in 23rd on this list is evidence of that. There will be an updated list at the conclusion of the winter season, followed by the final rankings in June after the spring season.
