Hays and Nelson Earn RMAC Coach of the Year Awards

Colorado Christian had an outstanding spring season athletically which is exemplified by Head Coaches Larry Hays and Philip Nelson earning RMAC Coach of the year honors. Both Hays and Nelson have led their respective teams to postseason success which has given them a chance to compete in the NCAA postseasons.

Larry Hays:     Coach Hays continued to add to his already stellar record as a collegiate coach as he led the Cougars softball team to a season record of 49-8 so far, and guided the team to winning the first RMAC tournament championship in school history earlier in May. That RMAC Championship title secured CCU a birth in the NCAA Regionals which begin on May 12th in Tyler, TX.

This year has been statistically one of the best in school history as they have already set a record for the most number of wins in a season. The team has re-wrote the single season record books including batting average, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, homeruns and several other categories which they now hold the top spot in the record books for.

Coach Hays continues to add personal accolades to his already impressive coaching career as he has already been awarded the Southwest Conference Baseball Coach of the Year, Big 12 Baseball Coach of the Year, NAIA Hall of Fame Inductee, Texas Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee, National College Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee. Hays now adds the RMAC Coach of the Year to the list.

Athletic Director Brian Wall spoke highly of Hays saying, "Coach Hays has done a tremendous job assembling and guiding this highly competitive CCU Women's Softball team. He has masterfully enabled his team to remained focused throughout the season, while also helping them to play freely and enjoy their experience! His spiritual investment into the lives of his players has been remarkable."

Philip Nelson:     Nelson has helped grow the CCU Women's Golf program into an RMAC powerhouse over the last five years with him at the helm. Nelson led his team to capturing the first-ever RMAC Team Championship this year and a birth into the NCAA Regional tournament where the team once again excelled finishing in second place and earning a trip to the NCAA National Championships which are taking place May 10-14 in Gainesville, GA.

Nelson's coaching led to having three players selected to the First-Team All-Conference in the RMAC (Faith Kilgore, Emily Donaldson and Courtney Andersson) including the RMAC Individual Golfer of the year in Faith Kilgore. Kiersten Bryant also was awarded with a Second-Team All-Conference award.

Nelson has been integral in the development of each golfer in the program as well as the program itself. He has cemented the Cougars as a team that is one of the best in the Country.

Athletic Director Brian Wall talked about Nelson's accomplishments by stating, "I am really proud of the incredible job Coach Nelson has done this year with the CCU Women's Golf team! He has worked extremely hard to provide an excellent, highly competitive experience for these women. His belief in this team and his perseverance to help them succeed has truly been impressive!"

Colorado Christian is blessed to have such amazing coaches leading the way for our programs, and the Athletic Department would like to congratulate both Larry Hays and Philip Nelson for being recognized as the RMAC Coaches of the year this year, and wish them continued success as they continue to compete in the NCAA Tournaments this month.
