Cougars Impress at Mountain Lion Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- For the second straight week, Indoor Track & Field traveled south to compete inside the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse at UCCS, taking part on Saturday in the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open. It was an excellent day for Colorado Christian as they saw several victories amidst strong performances team wide. 

WOMEN'S RECAP
Hannah George got the day started on the women's side, running a time of 7.93 in the 60m dash to take fifth in the event. Next came the one mile run, an event the Cougars performed at a very high level in. Molly Miller was the top finisher for her team with a mark of 5:20.42 which placed her second on the leaderboard. She was closely followed by teammate Elizabeth Mattson, who ran a 5:23.99 to take home third place. Michelle Kuipers placed the third CCU runner in the top five with a time of 5:32.03 to place fifth. 

Tara Smoker ran a brilliant race in the 400m, setting an indoor school record with a time of 1:00.07 to win the event and make history. George was fast in the event as well, recording a mark of 1:02.72 to place fourth in the race. The 800m was yet another strong event from CCU, led by Shannon King who placed third with a time of 2:25.67. Reagan Boling came just behind, running a 2:26.15 as she took fourth. Benisa Ellis, Alayna Wallace and Aislinn Warmka placed sixth, seventh and eighth as the Cougars competed very well in the 800m. Callie Ketner rounded out the track events for the women in the 3,000m, finishing fifth with a mark of 11:15.65. 

Winnie Spurlock competed in the long jump, taking seventh place with a mark of 5.08m. Ashley Vil took part in the triple jump, leaping 10.82m to take sixth overall. 

MEN'S RECAP
Caleb Hershey raced in the 5000m, running to a time of 15:55.62 as he took fourth in the event. Tyler Bradley blazed in the 60m to the tune of a 6.99 time for sixth place. Cross Country All-American Trent Cochran took part in the one mile run, placing second with an excellent time of 4:20.90. The mark from Cochran was converted at altitude to 4:09.49, good enough for an NCAA Provisional Time. Isaac Russo closely followed in third place with a mark of 4:23.79. Ethan Wampler took fifth as he came in at 4:35.78. 

Gabe Ring was strong in the 400m, placing third after a 53.23 run. Nate Johnson followed in fifth at 53.79. The 800m was another strong event for the Cougars, led by Alexander Vance who placed second with a mark of 1:56.42. Hudson Majeski closely followed in third with a 1:58.53 tally. Jonah Beard finished fifth in the 200m, running a time of 23.60. Matthew Storer closed out the day in incredible fashion, running his way to victory in the 3000m with a time of 8:33.29 to win his first race with the Cougars. This time was converted at altitude to 8:09.08, another NCAA Provisional Time, and Storer now sits at seventh in all of Division II in the 3000m. 

After an excellent meet on Saturday, CCU will now head to Kansas to take part in the 8th Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic on February 10th, with the event being hosted at Pittsburg State.
