LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian returned home on Saturday to take on RMAC foe CSU Pueblo. CCU battled hard, but in the end dropped a pair of games to the Thunderwolves.
GAME ONE
For much of the first contest, a pitcher's duel was the theme of the game. Jake Gimbel took the mound for the Cougars and pitched well throughout. CCU struck first in the second inning, taking the 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly from Aaron Morgan. Morgan gave his team the lead again in the fourth with an RBI single to make it 2-1. The Thunderwolves tied it in the fifth at 2-2, and they were able to find their offensive footing in the seventh and eighth as they exploded for 12 runs to claim an eventual 14-5 victory.
Gimbel pitched 6.1 innings for the Cougars, while Saxton Sorenson, JC Watne and Jonny Tewinkle all saw action on the mound. Morgan and Luke Thompson led the offense with 2 RBI apiece.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day was one of the more entertaining games you will see, as the two teams battled into extra innings in a back and forth affair. After CSUP struck for two in the first, CCU responded with a run in the first and another in the second on a triple from Frankie Shearn to tie the game up. Eli Ludwig then gave his team the lead with a base knock to make it 3-2.
Four straight runs from the visitors saw CCU go down by three runs, but they never flinched. Boedy Flores doubled home a run in the fifth, and Major Maydon unleashed a laser over the right field wall for a two-run shot to tie it at 6-6. Down to their last inning, Gabe Ramos hit a towering homer to tie it at 7 and send the game into extra innings.
The eighth inning was a wild one, starting with a three run top of the eighth from the Thunderwolves. CCU then loaded the bases before Ramos snagged an RBI by being hit by a pitch. Jordan Medina came through in the clutch, roping a two RBI single to center field as the score stood tied at 10-10. The Cougars could not find any more runs, and CSU was able to score two in the ninth for a thrilling 12-10 victory in a close battle throughout.
Harrison Nation started on the mound and went 5.1 innings with 6 strikeouts, while Chaz Graham finished the final 3.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Ramos led the offense with 3 RBI in the game.
The Cougars will look to bounce back as they take on CSUP April 16 at 12 and 3 p.m. MST at All Star Park.
