LAKEWOOD, CO- CCU took on CSU Pueblo in another pair of entertaining games at All Star Park. Colorado Christian split the series closing doubleheader in two high scoring affairs.
GAME ONE
The visitors struck first with an early run, but the Cougars struck back quickly and with a vengeance. Jordan Medina launched a three-run shot over the right field wall, and right after Major Maydon slammed a two-run blast to make it 5-1.
After CSUP brought the score back to 5-4, Eli Ludwig continued his hot hitting with an RBI single, then Luke Thompson crushed a two-run shot to extend the lead to 8-4. After a furious rally from the Thunderwolves put them ahead 9-8, Ludwig came through in the clutch yet again with an RBI double to tie things in the sixth. A single run was plated by CSUP in the seventh, and neither team could score from there as the visitors claimed a tightly contested 10-9 victory.
Robby Caro started the game, while Cole Kennedy closed strong with 3.2 innings pitched and just one run allowed. Medina led the offense with his three-run bomb.
GAME TWO
The second game was another offensive battle, and two big innings was all the Cougars needed to claim the win. One of those innings was the second, where CCU got started with an RBI bunt single from Frankie Shearn. Ludwig singled in another run, and Thompson doubled in a third run. Gabe Ramos doubled home two runs, and he came around to score eventually on a passed ball to make it 6-0.
A seven run rally gave CSUP a one run lead, but that was where the runs stopped for them and they continued for the home team. A fourth inning double from Medina tied it up, and Boedy Flores picked up a sacrifice groundout to give his team the lead. After an error allowed Simon Turner to reach first and scored Maydon, Shearn did more damage with a double to make it 10-7. Ludwig put the icing on an incredible 7 for 10 day at the plate with a two RBI single to close out a 12-7 win.
Saxton Sorenson pitched three innings, and JC Watne was excellent in relief as he went four innings with no runs allowed and five strikeouts. Ludwig propelled the offense with 3 RBI for a total of 5 on the day.
The Cougars continue play at nearby MSU Denver beginning with a night game at 6 p.m. MST at Assembly Athletic Complex on April 21.
