LOS ANGELES, CA- CCU headed west to California to participate in a pair of meets. Thursday saw several athletes take part in the Cal State LA Twilight Open, while the main event was the three day meet hosted by Azusa Pacific University, the Bryan Clay Invitational.
DAY ONE
Hannah George got the sprinting started at the Twilight Open, running a 25.67 in the 200m. Tara Smoker took part in the 400m, blazing her way to a third place finish and school record with a 57.16. Ashley Vil then took part in the triple jump, posting a mark of 10.88m.
DAY TWO
The next two days of competition took place at Azusa, beginning with a big Friday of events. Leading the way in the 5000m was Molly Miller, who ran to a time of 17:36.73 in the event. Following her was Lucy Pidek with a 17:45.61, and Norah Thompson came close behind with a 17:47.75. Callie Ketner followed with a 17:50.05 in the distance event.
Michelle Kuipers ran the 800m, posting a time of 2:10.45 to put herself at 18th in all of DII. Zanzie Demco followed with a 2:12.41.
DAY THREE
Smoker started the day off with another strong run in the 400m, coming just 0.01 off her PR with a 57.17. George then ran the 200m for the second time in the week, and flew her way to a school record and PR of 25.11. Miller ran the 1500m, among some tough competition, and came in with a time of 4:36.63. Pidek also ran the 1500, posting a time of 4:52.69. Demco ran in the open division of 1500m, setting a new school mark of 4:24.34 among a lot of division 1 competition to claim the 7th best time in division II. Kuipers ran in another heat of the 1500, running a 4:31.74.
Ashley Vil closed the competition with an outstanding mark in the triple jump, setting a school record and personal best in the event with a jump of 11.47m.
After a highly successful trip to California, the Cougars will return to Colorado for the Mines Pre-Conference Invite April 21-22.
