Golden, CO – The Cougars traveled to cross-town rival Colorado School of Mines, competing at the familiar track Wednesday and Saturday. The two day affair saw several strong performances along with several broken records.
Josiah Weeda, only in his first year with the Cougars, has already had an outstanding freshman year, breaking records in both the indoor and outdoor season. As the outdoor season progresses, Weeda made a thunderous statement, jumping for the first time in his collegiate career and annihilating the school Long Jump record. Weeda would manage a jump of 20'7.75" on his third attempt of the day, which would best the previous school records by 8 inches. Already school record holder in the 110 Hurdles, Weeda would similarly have an excellent day, pushing his 110H record with a time of 14.81, .02 seconds faster than his previous best. Having the school record in the 110 and 400 Hurdles, Weeda etches his name in the books for his third school record with the Long Jump. Having likely already qualified in 110 and 400 Hurdles for the RMAC Championships, Weeda will look to progress in LJ to compete in the trio of events.
Allister McCasland, similarly having a fantastic freshman year, continued to add to his list of accolades. McCasland would race the 100m on Wednesday, flying to a 11.40, the 5
th fastest 100 in CCU history. McCasland would also compete in the 400, running a new personal best of 50.56 as he continues the journey to sub 50. While a more than impressive feat, McCasland will look to continue to get faster with eyes set on the RMAC Outdoor Championships for both the 100 and 400 meter.
The longest distance saw the men's 10k (6.2 miles) with 3 Cougars in the race, an extremely competitive field with many nationally relevant runners.
Matthew Storer,
Ethan Wampler, and
Sean McCauley would all tow the line for the grueling race, winds howling across the track. An already mentally tough race, the wind conditions would test all three Cougars, with no one backing down. The gun would go off, racers pushing through the wind on the back stretch as they would continuously cut into the 25 lap race. Matt Storer, focused and determined, would lead the entirety of the race, coming through each mile in roughly 5 minutes. Wampler and McCauley would battle together as they would run in the pack behind, working together to take the burden of the wind. An unflinching race with the conditions, Storer would come through the line in 31:17 for victory, Wampler finishing 6
th with a time of 32:45, and McCauley in 10
th with a time of 32:59. While a strong testament to the mental fortitude of the runners, the Cougars will look to the RMAC 10k to attempt to qualify for nationals.
The men's 800 would be led by senior
Tate Fletcher, with
Nico Ramirez,
Kale Edmonds, and
Mason Gansz all towing the line. Fletcher would take the race out coming through the first lap in 57, managing to power through a solo lead and final time of 1:59, converted 1:58 at altitude. Ramirez, Edmonds, and Gansz would all run 2:05, 2:08, and 2:13 respectively.
Drew Stilson would solo the 1500, getting off the line strong, hanging off the back of a competitive heat. Stilson would hang on for the first three laps, finishing strong and closing on a Colorado College runner the final lap. Stilson would come through in a final time of 4:25 for a 6
th place finish.
This meet serves as the last race in the Cougars singlet for both
Drew Stilson and
Kale Edmonds. Stilson a sophomore graduating early this may, and Edmonds a senior, both see their XC/TF careers come to a close. Both Kale and Drew have been extremely influential men in the Cougars program, both men of high character who continuously point the team's eyes towards Christ. While not the same without either of them, the program would not be where it is today without the influence of those two, both on and off the track. Congratulations to both
Kale Edmonds and
Drew Stilson on a phenomenal career!
The Cougars will see a three-meet week this upcoming week, a group traveling to race in California, with another group returning to Mines. The dual meets in California, historically strong and important meets for the Cougars, are set April 16-18
th, with the Mines meet set for April 17-18
th.
