Sabrina Humphreys is truly one of the athletes who provided the foundation for the national success of our volleyball program. Sabrina came to us from with a typical Southern California Volleyball pedigree. All of her coaches talked about her abilities but all in particular talked about her leadership and how perfect the match would be between Colorado Christian University and Sabrina. We were not disappointed. Certainly her skills were excellent. She was one of most developed and complete volleyball players I ever had the pleasure of coaching. After getting her feet under her in her first year and before an injury cut short her career she was ranked in the top ten in the nation for both kills on offense and digs on defense.
But what impressed me the most and what impacted our program the most was her leadership. She took control of matches with her force of will. She made other players around her rise to her expectations. She pursued excellence and made others around her want to as well. It was this foundation that was the gift she left CCU Volleyball with. Players who played with her passed along this gift and attitude and all remembered Sabrina with her game face on.
It was such a joy to get to travel to Dana Point the summer after her first year with us to share in her wedding to Jimmy who was another gift brought from the beach to the mountains. As Sabrina’s volleyball career ended her and Jimmy’s ministry began. They had a heart for God and a passion for ministry and Sabrina brought her commitment and dedication to excellence from the court and into the chapel. To this day it brings a smile to my face whenever I think of their ministry together in the mountains. Children of the outdoors as well as children of God. As comfortable in His mountains as they were on His beach
A drive to excel physically, a wholehearted pursuit of excellence, and a love for God that enfolds others and brings out the best in those around her. These are the gifts that Sabrina Humphreys gave to our program. And I am so grateful that she did, because in generation after generation through my tenure I saw the strands of her influence on a young program. Sabrina led us and supported us as we grew and it is absolutely fitting that we honor her tonight for her efforts on the volleyball court and her impact on the lives around her.
